"Finishing our TX Straight Bourbon Whiskey in Barbados rum casks gave us an opportunity to take a bourbon we know and love and push it into new territory," Blair said. "We wanted to find a finishing barrel that would complement the whiskey rather than overpower it, and rum was a natural fit. Its sweetness and tropical character work seamlessly with the bourbon's spice, creating layers of fruit, richness and complexity while still allowing the essence of TX Straight Bourbon to shine through."
That last part matters. A lot of experimental finishes end up tasting like the finishing barrel and nothing else — all rum, no bourbon, or vice versa. Blair's approach here was about balance. Keep the bourbon recognizable. Let the rum casks add layers instead of hijacking the whole thing.
Why This Release Won't Be Around Long
If this sounds like something worth trying, the clock's already ticking. TX Whiskey is only bottling 1,100 units of the Rum Cask Finish, and once those are gone, that's it. No word on a second batch.
The bottles themselves come in a 375ml size — smaller than a standard 750ml bottle, which makes sense for a limited experimental release like this one. Each bottle will run $39.99, and customers are capped at eight bottles within any 30-day stretch. That limit keeps things fair and stops any one buyer from cleaning out the shelf.
